Learning from Home.

I've been thinking about a career change and because of the unusual hours I work I can't do any courses at my local college and so I'm stuck with learning from home.
Does anyone know if these things actually work? I've looked up LearnDirect, ICS, Open University and other websites but the only thing that worries me is the information from their adverts. They just seem like they take your money and leave you in a ditch.
My girlfriend has tried the Open University and although her books and CD's were posted, it's really something that I can't imagine them sending electrician equipment in the post..
I can't really try anything else but I want to know for sure before I buy that it's something I will actually learn from.

I have been studying with Open university for several years and really enjoy it. Having a timetable of assignments to be in by certain dates keeps you on your toes and the Tutor is always available if you need help as well as the course forum.
ICS courses are good but you really need to be motivated because there are no official assignment return dates to push you and no fixed exam date. If you are not motivated enough you will find yourself getting slack and eventually paying for a course you are not doing anything about.
