Well, in Ireland (is that where you are, incidentally?) a bawn is a defensive wall round a house or castle, originally to protect livestock in the event of an attack, but I'm not sure it would refer to the enclosed yard itself; and I reckon jno is right - in England it was a bailey (as in The Old).
