Could anyone help me as i am stuck on the top half of the crossword ?

1 down - the clue is - heart breaking story, ultimately coarse - 6 letters, i have E???H?

9 across - the clue is - rescued broken contracts - 7 letters - i have ??A?C?S

20 down - the clue is - cornish port was curtailed recently - 5 letters - i have N?W?Y
is it newby or newly ?

thank you both :) that leaves me with 2 down -

S?D?N - country south of france getting a normal start, could it be SUDAN ?
don't quite understand where the sudan would come into it :(

South of France means 'south' in french = sud
getting a = a
normal start = n (first letter)

sud + a + n = Sudan (country)
