ipod nano working itself - not charging

When i go to charge my 4gb ipod nano at the moment,all that comes up on screen is a triangular exclamation mark in front of what looks like a file icon,and the words www.apple.com/support/ipod,and then it dies.I've tried charging on the computer and also its docking station without any success.Any ideas anybody - I'm hoping its just the battery packed up,then it'll be easily replaced.Thank you for any help given.
