That would be the excellent Northern Exposure. I watched 3 episodes just last night!

Northern Exposure was the best programme ever to come out of the US.  Luckily I amanged to video most of the series so watch it regular.  If you ever get the chance or it is repeated I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

The first two seasons are available on Region One DVD - hurrah! This was easily the best US series of the early nineties, shame so few people saw it on late night Channel 4...
