I have recently handed my notice in at work and my leaving date is mid Jan 08. I'm currently pretty stressed about a number of things and have considered seeing the Doc. about it. One concern I have is if he signs me off for any period of time, how would this look on my refs. I'm not used to being off work due to illness at all and have never suffered from any unusual amounts of stress before so it's all new territory for me.

Unless the law has changed - you cannot hand your notice in when you are medically unfit - i.e. they will have to employ you until that medical certificate ends! So whether you hand that in - which would be against the law if you didn't and would leave you open to all sorts of issues around insurance! - and I do not think that has changed! - reference depends on your employer - being ill is no-one's fault ( or is it job related and that is not what you don't want a new employer to see - due to stress). Any new employer will look at your worth - some may look at your ability in coping with stress depending on which job you do - i.e. if you sell in a prestige shop - shouldn't be a prob - if you are an on the floor trader .....maybe!!!! and somewhere in between ... if they are realistic!...
