We called it the heely when I was growing up in Edinburgh, I loved it, best part of the loaf, we used to be told that if you ate the heely you would get straight teeth and curly hair.... or was it straight hair and curly teeth?

When we were kids just after the war, we used to have "crust" days when it was our day to eat all the crusts off the bread, loved it until Mum starting buying sliced loaves. My day was Monday, and as there were 6 of us then, we each had a day and a free-for-all on Sunday!!
