I own a cat d clio, its a fab car and have never had any problems with it. It is nearly 4 years old and would like to buy a new car, the only problem is I dont think I will be able to trade it in at a garage because of it being registered a cat d. can anyone tell me if I can or not? also I have heard dont know if this is true or not but after a period apparantly you can apply to get rid of the cat d classification off your log book, anyone know?

If a car is a Cat C, you have to have it VIC'd (Vehicle Identity Check), and this will appear on the new log book as "car has been substantially damaged and/or repaired" (or something similar). This doesn't happen for a Cat D.

The Cat D marker will always be on this vehicle, and if (or when) a garage does a HPI check, it will show up. There is no way of getting the marker removed at this point in time.

It will obviously affect the value, but whether the garage will trade it is another thing - they probably won;t want to re-sell it, so this would obviously affect what they would offer you - expect a trade value or less.
we would take a cat d trade in, and lots of garages do also, but some wont,it depends on what the damage was,it will allways be on the V5 that it is a cat d.why not sell it privately.
