Can anyone comfirm that, You cannot record on Timer from freeview to VCR/ Hard drive etc. Unless the TV's switched on! Is this Technology going forward !!!!!!!!!

If your DVR has a built in digital tuner then no, the TV does not need to be on.
The only reason your old video recorder could record with the tv switched off is because it has its own tuner.

All recording equipment will eventually have digital tuners. This is just a transitional phase.
