Are you sure it's an 'e'? Fitz is the beginning of many names and indicates a bas*ard - Fitzwilliam, Fitzgerald etc.

I would think that Fitzroy (Fitzroi) could be the answer as in a royal bas*ard.

Had to use * in case answer is stopped by AB

Unfortunately the E is correct as it's in 'assessmEnt' which fits with the theme of the crossword.

Thanks for the answer - knowledge is always useful somewhere down the line!

Could it be Heraldy ?
Bastardy was used in heraldry as a sign for bar sinister although incorrectly .
1. Heraldry. (not in technical use) a bend sinister or a baton.
2. the proof, condition, or stigma of illegitimate birth.
No ...pay no attention to my rambling .....it's 8 letters and your clue is 7 ..Sorry !
