The Eve Dallas novels by J D Robb are superb. But read the first three in that order so as to establish the fascinating characters for the rest of the long series.
Look out the 'Philip Dryden' books by Jim Kelly, 'The Water Clock', 'The Fire Baby', 'The Moon Tunnel' and 'The Coldest Book'. They're set in the Fens around Ely, and main character is an ex-Fleet Street reporter who works on his local rag. The stories usually begin with the discovery of a years-old murder that causes all sorts of other skeletons to come out of closets.

Good mystery/crime/thriller stories with a lovable character who gets himself into all sorts of scrapes.

You might also enjoy a couple of books by Kevin Lewis, he of 'The Kid' fame. They're 'Caitlyn' and 'Frankie', both set in modern gangland, again with lovely characters.
Hi, Try the following writers

Robert Crais (Elvis Cole novels) and Harlen Coben (Myron Bollitar novels).

Don't be out off by the names, they are very good crime novels.

P.S. If you like fantasy books try Magician by Raymond E Feist. Possibly the best book I have ever read,
Martina Cole writes good crime. Try 'The Goodnight Lady@ and Faceless. They are good ones!
I love the P J Tracy books, written by a mother and daughter!
