11 yeras ago I had a very bad reaction to hair dye and had to go on steroids for weeks. I will never be able to use them again but would really like some highlights but my hairdresser refuses to put any sort of chemicals on my hair. should I just stay as I am or get a second opinion as I believe that hair dye is very different from what is used to give bleached highlights.

worth a try? maybe you could ask at the hairdressers for a more natural colourant?
Your hairdresser is just being cautious, but you could have a skin test done using samples of any colourants which might be used. If nothing flares up within a couple of days, you'd probably be OK to go ahead and get it done, but since allergic reactions can occur at any time, you couldn't blame anyone if things went wrong again.
