Letting Down New Employers

Basically I've been offered a job working in admin. The people are lovely and it's easy to get to, well paid, a good job.

However it's not my dream job. I've never looked on it as a career move. Now I have an interview for a job I would really like - Classroom Assistant - it'd get me the experience I need to get on a PGCE and become a qualified teacher!

OK, so I haven't got the job, and probably won't BUT I'm so worried about letting the people from the first job down. They're so nice. I don't want to upset them or anything. It's fair enough saying they'll probably not care, which is probably true, but this place is notorious for being hard to get a job in, so I feel really lucky I've got one! Also, I just hate letting people down. I mean the classroom assistant is rubbish pay, but I really want it!

Am I worrying about nothing? Cos I probably won't even get the classroom assistant job! I just stress too much!

hi Princess, can you not take the admin job, then go for the interview for the classroom assistant one too?

Most employers put you on a trial period anyway.

Go for the job you really want. Its always easier finding another job, when you are in one already. If that makes sense.

Good luck, and no, you are not stressing too much

Thanks for the quick reply!

Sorry I didn't make it clear, I've accepted the admin job, due to start one week AFTER my interview for the Classroom Assistant.

If I get the classroom assistant one I'll start two weeks after I start at the admin one. But I just don't want to let the admin people down. They're really nice!

I probably won't even get the classroom assistant job, I just worry in advance! If I don't get it, it'd make life easier, but if I do get it, it'd hopefully help my career more than anything. Never mind it's rubbish pay, money isn't everything!
you will have a pretty good idea of how the interview for the classroom assistant job went before you start the admin job though wont you (unless I am thick and misread the Q!) Not a first! lol

So,as its so important for you career, I would have the interview anyway, knowing you have a job lined up if it comes to nothing.

But really, I wouldn't worry about letting the employers of your admin job down. At the end of the day, you have to think of what you want, your future career.

Thank you for your reply, I appreciate it lots :o)

I just can't help feeing bad about letting someone down :'o(
You go for what YOU want. Really don't feel bad about letting the employers down. If you do get the classroom assistant job, then tell your employers that your dream job has suddenly become available to you, and its an opportunity you cant turn down.

I am sure they would understand, and they could re advertise the position.

Really wishing you lots of luck. Let us know how you get on xx
Yeah you're worrying to much its your career you''ve got to put yourself first and do whats right for you.
You have nothing to worry about. If you are offered the teaching assistant role - all you need to do is give your 4 weeks notice to the personnel office of the admin job.

You will not be letting them down - with all jobs, whether you leave, get sacked or drop dead, the post will be advertised before your body is cold.
I agree with what everyone has said so far. You need to do what is best for you. I was just wondering if you really knew what you were getting into as far as being a teacher. I recommend you ask many teachers how they like their job. I say this only because my wife decided to become a teacher. Well, she's been teaching for 5 years now and hates every minute of it, as do 90% of the teachers I've met. We live in the US, so it might be very different where you live. I'm not trying to burst your bubble. I just wanted to tell you about my observations. There is almost nothing worse than having a career that you hate (so my wife tells me). Luckily, I am now making enough money in a career that I love to support both of us. Her last day is tomorrow. Whoo hoo!!!
