I think Win-mx is best - but don't agree to the bit where people can download files off you, selfish I know, but it cuts down on viruses. Plus, a good virus detector and firewall is essential - get them before you sign up.
Sorry - I assume you meant free sites - I only ever download old pop singles, so I don;t need the new 'paid'for' sites, so I can't comment on them. If you like old stuff, Win-mx is great.
Why would people downloading files from you give you a virus?
WinMX is good, as is DC++ and torrents. None of these are "sites", they're peer-to-peer applications and all free.

A friend of mine in work recommends eDonkey.  It's 99 pence a month for unlimited music downloads.

Not tried it myself yet but am giving it serious consideration.

Soulseek is free and specialises in music sharing. It is software that you download too. The best I've used since Napster was taken down!
I use KazaaLite for downloading individual songs, and BitTorrent for downloading albums.I have WinMX installed, but got fed up with the long cues (sometmes days). and rarely use it now.
I find iTunes to be the best of the paid for sites. It is simple and reliable to use and has plenty of features. You pay for tracks or whole CDs on credit card as you purchase them. Virgin is also good but operates a different payment system where you have to buy credits in advance. A really good feature is being able to listen to a whole track for one penny rather than 30 seconds for nothing on iTunes. The Virgin search facility is nowhere near as good as iTunes though.
I used Napster which is unlimited downloads for 10 a month. However you can only use them on the PC on which you downloaded them. Personally that suits me fine but that may be a problem for some. The advantage over the free ones is I know as soon as I click download it's going to be downloaded fast, virus free and the song I wanted. I just got really tired of either not finding what I wanted, not getting what it said it was or various other problems. As for andy hughes comment about old pop songs, napster has pretty much every thing I have ever looked for. They have the UK top 40 singles and albums going back to 1960.
Dear world, you seek DC++. Tis free in every way.
Blubster is good, and free
