My ten year old grandson (diagnosed with severe dyslexia) has recently been given by his school his weekly list of words to learn, which include: vaccinate, processional, chlorophyll, mortgage, baguette.

Does anyone have any views on whether this is reasonable given the circumstances?

Thanks in advance.

Not reasonable. Go and talk to his teacher about it. Does he get extra support for his dyslexia?

Was message passed to his new teacher???
Most schools will tailor the spellings to the individual children. For example:my 10 year old son has special needs,he has Asperger Syndrome. He is academically way ahead of the rest of his class so is given spellings that most adults would struggle with. There is another boy in his class with the same condition who can't spell to save his life bless him,he is given words that the reception class would be given.I would speak to the head teacher about it as the class teacher obviously hasn't a clue.

Many thanks Machecoul and daffy 654.

There have been a number of meetings with the head teacher and the form teachers and although extra support in school has been promised this has not materialised at least not on a lasting basis.
Another meeting is likely shortly and your comments will be helpful in planning for this!
Hi GlenB...you need to find out who the SENCO (special educational needs co-ordinator)is for your grandson's school and speak to them about your problem, they have the knowledge to intervene on your behalf if necessary. I wish you luck.
Severe Dyslexics are normally put onto School Action (extra support in school) or School Action Plus (help from a specialist), unless their progress in school is not being affected. Check whether either is in operation, because if you need to get extra funding from the Local Authority (via a Statement) they will normally require School Action to ahve been tried first.
Before you think the worst of the teacher, perhaps it was just a simple error and he was given the wrong list? Teachers are only human.........
god thats stupid,i can myself just about say some of them never mind spell them
