"How" do we call it? Gently, if you want a response.
It's granite, consisting of fine-grained minerals including quartz, feldspar, muscovite and biotite. The geology meant that many changes had to be made to the design, eg Roosevelt is set a little further back than intended because of the amount of fractured granite needing to be removed before they hit smooth rock. Jefferson had to be moved from the left to the right of Washington, and his head is tilted to avoid a crack which would otherwise run through his nose.
