I have an electrical cable that would normally supply a socket (that you would plug a plug into) and a cable coming from a spotlight. What I want to do is wire both of them up to the same dimmer switch, is that possible?

Thanks

Elaine, It sounds as though you don't know anything about electrics, I do not wish to be rude, but wouldn't it be better and safer to get someone who is experienced in this sort of thing?. Do yourself a favour.
Trying to translate what you are writing.... I take it you have some kind of extension lead that you normally plug your spotlight into and you wish to control the brightness of the spotlight?? If I read that correctly then you simply need one of these http://www.rapidonline.com/productinfo.aspx?&t ier1=Electrical+%26+Power&tier2=Elect+Prod+%26 +Lighting&tier3=Domestic+Mains&tier4=Rotary+di mmer+switch++with+13A+socket&moduleno=64145&ca tRef=23-4874
