Summoning a lift

I honestly dont know how I got to be 52 and not know this but which button do you press to summon a lift - the down arrow to bring it down, travel down ?? Just spent a week in Cyprus getting shoved aside by Russians. Food, coffee and the lift, when they would press whatever lift button we hadn't. And when the thing came they would jump in and zoom off and leave you there. This question may, in addition, be a gripe about their lack of manners.

If you want to go down, push the down button. If you want to go up, push the up button.
If you push the wrong one and get in the lift that arrives, and there are people already in it, you may well end up going the wrong way!
Eg if you are on the 5th floor wanting to go down and you push the up button, a lift travelling from the 1st floor to the 10th will stop, but when you get in and push the button for the 1st floor, you may end up going to the 10th floor to drop them off first and then onto whereever you wanted to go
