spiders in the bath

can spiders climb through drain pipes or (as I have read somewhere) only by absailing, if so how do they ascend in order to do this?

No, spiders don't climb into baths through plug holes, they'd have to begotiate the S bend. which is full of water, and spiders are not keen on dirty drains anyway, they are very clean animals. The make their way around the house, usually unseen, unless they happen into bath or basin, and are unable to climb out.
