The one who died in the accident turned out to be the copper,so the one in hospital was Anna.It was proven that Nicky was right in the trial,that Anna was innocent.The person that attacked them was the coppers husband thinking she was having an affair.It was the copper who was stabbed in the leg(by her husband)because she had given Anna her coat so it was mistaken identity.

You forgot that Nicky made up with her father and it was found that his wife had died due to the bus accident.
