Any number of companies are tying to cash in on people with bad credit history. They charge a fortune though in interest rates, penalties and insurance. Your best bet is likely to be to contact your local Housing Associations. Many offer schemes where they mix rent with mortgage payments allowing you to own a part share building up to a full share over time.
Consult a broker who is a member of the mortgage code - a lot of non status lenders do not accept direct business so this is a good route - I recommend HFS Mortgages in Macclesfield 01625 611262, they helped me.
Depending on why and for how long you have had a bad credit reference, you can approach the various credit agencies (ie. Experian) to have the situation redressed. If you now havea 'clear' record as it were, you can insist the 'bad' information is removed.
