I notice up for property auction are some small plots with telephone repeater stations on them. If I bought one what can it be used for? Residential?

Depends where they are. If in a town within an existing setllement area, as defined by the local authority plan of that area, then quite possibly yes.
But more likely these things are going to be along the roadside out in the countryside. In which case they are likely to have some sort of business use constraint on them.
