Hi,

I wrote to my bank to close down one of my accounts and received a letter back to say as they do not have an up to date copy of my signature they cannot do this.

Why have they not got an up to date signature, have they lost it? and if so are they in the wrong? (data protection and everything!)

Well maybe the signature they have on file for you is quite old and slightly different to the way you sign now. When was the last time you provided them with a signature for them to check against?
Signature's change over the years, especially if you were under about 25 when you opened the account. So the signature on your letter might look very different to the specimen signature on their files. The bank is acting in your interests by refusing to make any changes to your account unless they're absolutely sure you're who you say you are.

Simply go into the nearest branch of the bank, with your passport and a few other forms of ID, such as a driving licence and/or recent utility bills. Explain the situation to them and they'll ask you to complete a form giving them a new specimen signature. You can then immediately close the account.
