Last night while flicking thru an encyclopaedia of world history with my kids I came across an illustration of a battle during the american civil war. Swapping playing cards came instantly to my mind. Were there ever cards like these on sale with chewing gum as collectibles in the u.k. I am talking about 30 years or so ago. If the answer is yes I would really like to know the approx date.

Not sure about chewing gum, but you could get cards with cigarette packs, roughly in the mid 60s methinks! :)
I don't remember cards with chewing gum BUT Bubblegum did have cards and they were very popular.
There were Civil War cards issued with bubble gum in the early to mid 60s (I used to collect them) and they also contained mock Confederate bank notes. The story is that some kids took them to a bank and got them changed into Sterling!! This series was very popular with everyone until they were replaced by Mars Attacks!! series of cards.
I remember collecting the American Civil War cards included with bubble gum. I remember them being quite 'bloddy' I also remember them having captions, one in particular saying 'crushed by wheels' as a poor soldier dies under the wheels of a wagon. I wonder if they are still around anywhere?
