Tornado, comet and meteor could also be possibilities.

Thanks for your answers, all are possibilities but I think I'll go with lightning.
Meteor fits the definition better
Just to be even more awkward there was an American aircraft called the Shooting Star (a Lockheed I think) - a meteor is a shooting star so both answers fit the clue perfectly but the Gloster Meteor was a British aircraft so which is correct may depend on the source of the quiz

My original thought was 'shooting star' but could not find an aircraft so dismissed it, it's been reinstated!
