A man who beat his wife, slashed her foot with a knife and pressed a hot iron into her back twice has escaped with only a fine. He not escaped jail but he also didn't have to carry out any community work - as he is too busy with his job. The management consultant abused his wife for not making his sandwiches and not ironing his shirt. What do you think? Is this a strong enough deterrent for wife beaters? Women are encouraged to report violent partners but do punishments like this make it seem pointless as this man clearly has problems?

very strange - i think the CPS should appeal for a better sentence as it seems to be suggesting that if you have a good job you are in some way above the normal operation of the law, 2000 isn't going to affect this guy much and i find it a bit offensive that had he been a uneducated factory worker or something similar he would have been punished more.

plus does anyone else find the statement reported from the judge that 'it was the circumstances of the marriage that had provoked Read and that now those circumstances had gone, sending him to prison would help no one' - how bizarre is that! I have a burning hatred for my upstairs neighbours for being too noisy, if i were to murder them in their sleep (if they ever went to sleep) then those circumstances would have gone so sending me to jail would help no one!

(can i join the string'um high club too?)

As you can see from the picture of this charming man in Gromit's link, he STILL hasn't managed to get his shirt properly ironed, poor lamb.

Well I have known a bloke who was treated in roughly the same way by his wife. He didn't have the option of going to the police because lets face it they probably would have laughed at him. Like some others here he wouldn't dream of hitting his wife so he stuck it out til she run off with another bloke.
Do you think she would have got nearly the same sentence (as pethetic as it was) if it had been the other way round?
It does happen to blokes to.
