Try Hedrin, it's non toxic , unlike some other common products and it works brilliantly.

These are apparently fab! Its grooves get rid of the eggs as well and it has a lifetime guarantee so if it breaks they will send you another!
Once rid if you wash your childrens hair in shampoo and conditioner that is for coloured hair, this keeps them at bay too. We suffered so much with our eldest daughter who just seemed to be plagued with them no matter what we did and someone suggested the coloured shampoo and conditioner and she has been nit free every since. This was after a lot of combing every day, you really have to spend the time getting them out.
Of course if you don't want to do that then at the very least always use a conditioner after shampooing or even a leave in conditioner.
Their horrible things but perserverance and you can beat them :o)
Like Wingnut says use a leave in conditioner (I think Avon do one). Comb through with a nit comb when the hair is still wet witht the conditioner.
Coconut oil, you buy it in spray form, it doesn't kill them, spray it on the infected head, the little darlings then can't grip, and fall off.
My hairdresser swears by using quassia chips
i used tea tree oil shampoo on my kids hair. never got them again.
Any cheap cooking oil will solve the problem. It smothers any live bugs too.
my mum used to use vinegar on our hair.it smelt terrible but it worked
