I was at a wedding where there were no speeches. It was good cos there was a very relaxed atmosphere.
Make your speech short and to the point . Write it out even if you think you can manage without reading it , then if you get nervous it will be there to grab.
I've been to two weddings last year and this year where they had the speeches before the meal, instead of the traditional which is after the meal. All the men giving speeches said it was so much better as they could get their speech out of the way and then enjoy the meal and a drink.
i say, don't compare your speech to anyone elses. get tips on what should be mentioned in the speech, but fit them in in a personal way. miss out the bits that don't need to be said, and just have a laugh with the rest of it. it doesn't have to be long, just small and personal.
...wow, that last sentance sounds a bit rude doesn't it?!

Cheers for all your help guys!! Think I'll ask the other speakers (best man etc) if they reckon we should do speeches before meal. The food would taste better then!! I'm going to keep the speech as natural and personal as possible too.
i have been best man at 3 weddings and believe me it is an excellent idea to get the speeches out of the way my meals went down in lumps through nerves keep your speech short and for god sake dont forget to mention your new wifes parents in some capacity lol good luck...........
