My vet claims my dog has kennel cough, this is twice in 2 months and she has never been in kennels. when I look it up on the internet it says the dog should behave as normal apart from the cough but my dog is hiding in corners, shivering, panting and it sounds like she is struggleing to breath, I am really worried has anyone else seen any of these symptoms in Kennel cought

yes my dog was just like that when he got it it was like he just didn't know what to do with himself as he kept coughing this nasty phlem up he just would not come out of the kitchen couse i assume he didn't want to make a mess on the carpet but he also didn't want to be away from me it was awfull I felt so bad for him. there could be an epidemic of it in your area so just taking your dog out for her normal walks could be where she is getting it from that may be why she has had it twice now my sympathies are with you and your dog its horrible I hope she feels better soon. :-)

Thanks. It's very scary and she is obviously terriefied thats why I am so worried it might be something else cause she is no actually getting anything up. She is taking medicine for it but she is really not herself. If she is no better today I will just have to go back to the vet
my dog had kennel cough and i really didnt want to pay for the expensive medicine that the vet prescribed, a friend reccommended that i use benylin for children, and it worked wonders. i was very happy as it saved me money and it did not cost a fortune trying to make my dog better.
You don't say how old your dog is? In old dogs and puppies kennel cough can be life threatening and I would really not try and treat it myself.

A dog does not have to be in kennels to get it, it can get it walking down the street.

It tends to have alot of different symptoms in different dogs, I had three dogs and only one showed signs of a cough, and I only took one to the vet, the other two only had minor symptoms and were hardly affected by it.

This is one time when I would trust the vet, as if it is kennel cough he/she probably knows it is going around your area, and if your dog is showing such bad symptoms then she really does need treatment by a vet. I am sure your dog will be better soon if it is kennel cough.

I would be wary of giving her anything from the chemist if she is on medication from the vets as this could cause more problems.

There is a vaccine for kennel cough, you could ask your vet about it next time you visit.
Forgot to add you should keep your dog away from other dogs as she can pass it on to them, and as I said in older dogs or puppies it can be life threatening.
lauraking, why bother taking the dog to the vet when you are not going to listen to his advice? I would not hesitate to get my dogs treated by a vet if they were showing any symptoms of any disease or problems. Cost should not be a consideration. If you can't (or won't) afford it, don't have a dog.

Kennel Cough can be caught from your clothes or by airborne contact, and can be fatal for young pups and older dogs if not treated with antibiotics.

I suspect the hot weather has not helped the symptoms.

Listen to your vet and take his advice and give your dog any medication prescribed.

my dog was the same she is now on noroclav and childrens benylen which the vet as given so i would take note of your vet
