I'm using a dell with xp pro, 2 different brand burners installed (both sata) A TSST TS-H653A and an Optiarc AD 7170S. Both are specified as being compatible with both + and - r dvds but neither will burn -r dvds, just ejecting stating the disc isn't readable. What possible reasons and solutions are there?

This sounds like you are using the built in Windows cd burner. Get a copy of a commercial CD/DVD burner or a free one on the internet and it should work. If now post back, also is there an error code displayed?
