Hi.......I`ve just bought a 2.5 diesel Transit and am having probs engaging gears......clutch not disengaging properly. Is it easy to adjust?

Just another thought here. Whwn you are travelling does the engine seem to be revving too high if so you could have clutch slipping problems. How many gears anyway??
Sounds like the clutch may be worn out. Coupled with your other post regarding low speeds and bad performance up hills as well as trouble with gear changes, I would suggest that you investigate this cause first, as a slipping clutch will be inefficient and eventually you'll end up going nowhere as the van won't move. Other than this, the clutch plates may be contaminated with oil etc, which usually means replacement as well. If the clutch is not at fault, a worn selector fork in the gearbox can causes problems with gear selection. If you need a clutch replacement, I would suggest Mr Clutch if you have one near to you, they were cheapest for my Sierra and did a good job. It was cheaper than me buying the bits and losing a days wage to do it myself (and a lot less swearing).
Further to my previous post, put the handrake on and put the van in first gear and try to pull away, if there is hardly any noticeable pull, it's probably a worn clutch. Most Ford clutches have been self adjusting for many years, so unless your Transit is very old, it is probably not manually adjustable.

Hi everyone...thanks for the posts and the advice so far. I`m not necessarily wanting to do things on the cheap but being a canny Scot I don`t like rip-off merchants if there`s an easy solution. The problem is the exact OPPOSITE of clutch slip, so being a complete and utter novice I`m wondering if there`s a cable somewhere which would allow the clutch to disegage with less travel on the pedal. Trouble more to do with pedal movement than anything else. Winter project so no real urgency to get things done. Many thanks again.
yep it adjusts. a rough guide is that the clutch and brake pedal should be the same height from the floor. look behind the clutch pedal and you will see the clutch cable comming into the cab through the bulkhead. there are twoo locknuts to allow you to adjust the cable. however this is'nt the way that clutches fail due to wear and tear / lack of adjustment. sound more like the pressure plate is'nt releasing correctly due to an internal failure.
Hi everyone. Need advice regarding running gear on 1982 Ford Transit Diesel. There eminates a grinding noise when the van is fully loaded and running up hill in second gear with power loss. The clutch is not slipping. The differential is ok as I opened it last week to check if the Crown wheel and pinion were ok but not to sure about the differential parts inside? but oil had no shinny metal parts in it. The gear box gets hot when running the oil level is ok. Could the bearings in the GB be causing the noise when under high load because it runs well down hill and on flat ground? Thanxs for info
