we have just bought one daughter a gelding pony and we are actively looking for another pony for our other daughter. Is it ok to mix mares and geldings in the same field or is it better to have same sex ones? THANKS for anyones reply.

We've had horses by the dozens here in western U.S. and have pastured mares and geldings together with no problems. Th epastures run from small, (100 acres or so) to larger free-range of several hundreds of acres. Sometimes a mare will establish herself as the lead mare (as in the wild) and will tend to push a timid gelding around, sometimes mercilessly... but they soon get over it...
No problems mixing them, but mares can be a bit nappy, i.e. will nip or bite the geldings, squeal at them and generally be right little madams - hence the term 'marish'!

I also would always choose a gelding for the above reason, as in my experience they are much more easy going when handling or riding them.
