What is the origin of the superstition that breaking a mirror brings seven years of bad luck?

yes... but why *seven* years?
Probably for no other reason than the fact that the number 7 is frequently seen in religious/mythological/superstitious settings. The world was supposedly created in 7 days and happy people claim to be "in 7th heaven". 7 is generally seen as lucky - though with mirror-breaking it's UNlucky - as compared to 13, which is always unlucky...probably on the basis that there were 13 people at the Last Supper, one of whom was a traitor.
It comes from the Victorian age in Britain - it would cost a servant 7 years worth of wages if she broke the mirror of her employer.
