I am doing up my nephew's original high chair for his baby due in November. It is a traditional wooden one, and I need to be sure that the finish I use is safe for the baby. Any suggestions?

My wife is also badly in need of a makeover. They won't take her in the skip. Any suggestions?
That is a really lovely idea, i bet the highchair you are doing up is much better than any modern one. you are right about our throw away society.
I think if you use a water based paint for wood its ok. But probably best to always cover the bit baby eats off. i used this paint (think it was called satinwood) for two lovely wooden toy boxes for my son and they have lasted well and hes come to no harm so far! Hope that helps.
Thanks aims1202 for your advice and encouragement.
Sorry derrynoose, you asked a question, and I gave a suggestion. No need to get narky about it
Well done for re-using!

I would suggest - Sand it down a bit and then go over it with an acrylic based paint. It will give a waterproof finish but no too many nasty fumes.
