visa requirements for eurostar

i have two south african friends with me presently and they're hoping to visit paris on the eurostar for one/two days but they have no schengen visas. can anyone tell me if this is needed for one day's travel and if there is even a customs passport check done on that side?thanks

According to the website of the French consulate, holders of South African passports always require a visa to enter France:
http://www.consulfrance-londres.org/article.ph p3?id_article=322

There are no passport formalities in France but this is only because, under a reciprocal arrangement, French border police check the passports of all travellers at Waterloo International.
