I'm doing some research for a novel and wondered if anyone can tell me how long it's likely to be from the moment someone decides that they want to be a vicar, to actually taking up a post.

It depends upon the age of the person taking vocation. For a person under 30, from the call to sponsorship, advisory panel to recommendation, training to ordination usually takes about 4-5 years. If they enter training with a degree in theology this can be reduced by a year.

Brilliant! Thanks for this Octoavius.
Is that just Catholicism, Octavius?
Unless you have God on your side, in which case it takes five minutes at most.
My answer was based on the assumption that MrsJ was referring to a Church of England Vicar rather than a Roman Catholic Priest. If MrsJ, wishes to query the differential, then I am happy to oblige.
