Yeah well the Yanks have imported this silly idea into this country and so we all have to go along with it, because if we don't we are considered stick inthe mud, miserable old gits or what not.
Baby shower? Soon this will become a "tradition" and the retailers will be rubbing their hand with glee. What a silly thing to do. Why not just havethe baby, God willing, a perfect normal healthy baby? Why the Yankee glitz? Go back in time even ten years, and if you mentioned "baby shower" people would look at you like you had two heads!
No, I'm not, "raining on your parade," just asking you to refuse to become a victim of 21st Century consumerism. Think about it.
Oakleaf, ALLO is american.
god how miserable is oakleaf? allo is'nt spending your money is she, it,s a lovely idea! can i come?? ha ha
I threw a baby shower for my mate about 2yrs ago and I sent out a little poem on all the invites, was quite sweet actually and I still have it. We just ate food, listened to music and she opened all the pressies.
As a 'Yank' living in the UK for many years I am pleased that one of our less crazy ideas-lol- is being adopted here. It is NOT consumerist-but is a great way for a first-time mum to get all the necessary (and not so necessary) bits she will need for her baby. Ounce for ounce the little darlings are very expensive and every little bit helps. We also have bridal showers for the same reason.

well oakleaf51........... did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed??????????

this is her second baby shower i'm throwing for her. i want this to be better than the first!
see she was my best friend before i married her brother. i lik the poem idea, i was thinking of writing one.
Oakleaf - I'm with you on this one. Why, oh why do people need baby showers?
pastafreak - when I had my children (they are now teenagers) people bought me the necessary items (and not so necessary ones) when my babies were born. It was lovely getting cards and presents for the new born. Did you think that people didn't buy presents for the baby before the advent of baby showers??!!
This is the poem I wrote.. Feel free to use it... Or adapt it! Lol

I invite you all to celebrate,
Adelles coming bundle of joy.
I hope you will stop by.
Please dont be shy or coy.

A great night we will make it,
With all the girls out to play.
Bring all the gifts you like,
But at home the men must stay.

If you bring a bottle each,
Then Ill supply the food.
We can all have a drink,
To get us in the mood.

So come on now, dont disappoint.
And please all cheer with me,
To congratulate our Adelle,
On the start of her new family.
Why oh why do people have to knock a tradition that others have grown up with? It seems unnecessary and a bit petty to me. Baby showers started in the early part of the 20th century, becoming popular in the post-war baby boom-a way for women to bond and celebrate all that new life. And spudqueen,it is certainly not a 'need'...just something nice that friends do for each other....also it is NOT strictly an American tradition. There are variations across europe and in africa! Gee-I bet some crazy traditions are being imported into the US and Spain by homesick Brits!! lol
pastafreak - but people in this country have not grown up with this 'tradition' - that is what both Oakleaf and myself are saying!! If you are American and/or live in the US then fine, have a baby shower. I have no objection. But no-one, I repeat, no-one who is British can have grown up with this 'tradition' and I'm only using the word 'tradition' because you did! It may be a tradition in the US, maybe even in Africa and other European countries but it is NOT a tradition in Britain!
Who cares if it's not a tradition that we have grown up with? I for one think it's a nice tradition and I love the idea of celebrating something like that with my friends! Halloween isn't British but I am sure that is something many Brit kids get to do and their parents encourage! That is a tradition very celebrated now in Uk! Have either of you ever taken your kids or friends kids trick or treating? Or gone to a Halloween party!

A baby shower is a lovely idea and it's one of the nicest things to celebrate.
Hi Rubyrose - yes I have celebrated Hallowe'en with the children but I think that you will find that Hallowe'en has been celebrated in Brtiain for a while - probably since before America was discovered! I have let my children go trick or treating once, under protest but again I don't hold with that - holding people to ransom basically. I just feel that Britain is becoming the 51st State and there is nothing wrong with holding on to our traditions and customs rather than taking on another countrys.
Well in that case, if it's simply because we have enough 'traditions' and we don't need anymore then I would like to get rid of Halloween and keep baby showers. Surely it's nicer to give gifts to a pregnant woman than demand sweets off a stranger? Pfffft... don't be so silly. I have known baby showers to be celebrated for years and years, but who cares how new they are... they are a lovely idea.
