There is a roaring meg retail park in stevenage. Anybody have any ide why it's called this ? I've found that there is a roraing meg cannon that was used in the 1600's in a battle, but I can't see that this is connected with stevenage in any way. Has been bugging me since i moved up that way, so any help would be great.

It was an underground river which flowed through that area of Hertfordshire long before the new town was built.

Before it was a retail park it was the local waste tip!

It is the name given by the early locals to the wind which gusted across the area of land before it became a retail park. The land there was a long and flat plane and winds could reach high speeds unpeded by buildings or vegetation. At times it whistled, but on particularly windy nights it roared. Early locals also talked of an entity or witch, named Meg, that roamed the area

I would be interested to know if any Stevenage historians could confirm any of this.
