Which model of portastudio? Transferring the stuff via your sound card is not a good idea because:
a) It will convert it from digital to analog and back again
b) It will merge all the tracks to a single stereo track.

Most portastudios have a USB or firewire port for transferring the content digitally.

would it be poss to get red and whites to usb lead ya think?
You still haven't specified the model. The only Yamahas that I know of have USB ports. You should also be able to take the audio out and connect it to the line-in jack of your sound card (not the preferred option).
If you do, then you need to double-click the volume control in your system tray and ensure that the Line volume is on max, and not muted. Then you can use Audacity to record.
