Strange looking antique - water bottle ?

Hi all, my girlfriend has recently aquired a strange looking water bottle type thing (she probably thinks its going to make her filthy rich !).

Can anybody shed any light as to what the devil it is ?

Looking closely there seems to be a catch either side for a strap.

Could it be a back warmer for outdoor workers? Put hot water in and strap it to your back?

It is 14 inches long and 10 inches wide, the lady she bought it from seems to think its for a horse but she also said that that was a wild guess !
Ive tried google but im stuck on what to write in the search box .

Hi, I don't know anything about horses but could it be a sadle warmer, i.e. to go under the sadle in some way to warm the rider's seat? That's what it looks like to me!
