Eye contact. It is hard for someone to ignore you when you look them in the eye as you talk to them.
What do you mean by residents anyway?
Hey Grandmacath,

Body language, speaking, sign language.

To encourage communication: SMILE :-) friendly open body language, eye contact.

Hope this helps xx

thank you for your answers, i thought they were the answers i was looking for i had wrote them down but i doughted myself as i allways do ,psychick what i mean by residents is the client's i care for in a residincial home for the alderly thanks again
Here's a good one for you - singing!
My old Mum was in a nursing home and the matron always encouraged them to join in a good old singalong.
Mum had always enjoyed singing so the matron wrote to "Big Breakfast" (you remember that, all those years ago?) and they came and filmed her! She was on live tv singing her favourite song. Best thing that ever happened cos we had it taped and now when I miss her, I can put it on and watch it.
All the best for your course x x
building up a good rapport is essential, this means making sure that people know that information they trust you with will be kept confidential, finding ways too include evryone in conversations, show that you're listening by eye contact (as mentioned before), repeating things back, expanding on others points. Love the singing idea as well!
mammar , thats lovely that your mum was taped singing and a comfort for you to watch it when you are missing her .
:-) xx
grandmacath, you are doing your NVQ2 in health and social care then!! same as me. you need to get the book Health & Social Care by Yvonne Nolan. All the answers are in there and so easy to find!!
