flying whilst pregnant?

Hi,
We are due to go on holiday over chrsitmas, we are trying for a baby. Doe's anyone know the earliest and latest you can fly during pregnancy? It's a very long flight (over 15 hours!) so I want to pre plan!!

i don't think that there is an earliest, you just have to bear in mind that you may be feeling pretty crap for the first 12 weeks, and 15 hours is a long time to spend in an aircraft toilet! on the other hand, you may feel perfectly fine. As regards a latest date, I believe that this can vary from airline to airline, but it is the pilots decision whether to take you or not. Also, most of the deadlines given are to fly without a doctor's letter, you can fly later as long as you have a letter from your doctor, and the pilot is willing to take you - however, unless you have any major problems, I think that even if you got pregnant now, you would probably still be within the limit of most airlines.

I had a boss who was still flying at 38 weeks, but that was within the UK and she never actually told them how many weeks she was, she just had a small bump and walked onto the flight and was never asked how long she had to go!

Thanks so much for your advice, we have been trying for 2 years now so the pessimist in me is saying it's not going to happen anyway but maybe booking this holiday will give my body the push it needs (when you stop looking for something it always turns up type thing!) If I do fall pregnant and can't fly then I will quite happily give up the holiday - it will be worth it in the end.

Hi Louise, I also took two years to get pregnant with my first - after the first year, we asked for a referal for fertility tests. When this came through, we went through a range of tests including a laparoscopy and at the end of it they decided that there was nothing wrong. I got pregnant the next month. Sometimes the stress of trying makes your body do strange things - chill out, get drunk and forget about it would be my advice, if you are sure that there is nothing physically wrong. If you are not sure, then ask for a referral - even if you are under 35, they should refer you after this amount of trying. Incidentally, we reckoned that it would take 2 years to have another one, so we didn't take any precautions after our first, that would be why we ended up with 2 boys 13 months apart. lol

Most earlines let you fly up to 34 weeks, but some wont let you fly after 28 weeks. Also some will request a note form your doctor to say you are well enough to be flying. So check all these with your airline before flying

Vaccines are another possible issue depending upon where you are going. I flew when 28 weeks pregnant but was not allowed to have the innoculations recommended as they are 'live' vaccines. I was still permitted to travel, but was advised not to leave the holiday complex.

My doctor wouldn't let me fly after 35 wks or travel any length after 37 even in car.
