of course not!, it is your life, your place, you can always put the cat/dog in another room if familt visit
Go for it!

My ex husband is allergic to pet hair but wanted a dog..so he bought one of those short haired breeds.

Don't put your life on hold because of visitors :o)
I have a Bedlington terrier and she is not huge and doesnt shed any hair. A really good breed for you - get a doga nd you will never look back!!
That's the one, Sally...they look a bit like a sheep, don't they?
Of course you are not - I presume that you have worked out that you can afford and are able to care for a pet, you are an adult now so make your own mind up. Consider though that your family will be unlikely to be able to help you to look after it if you are ill or on holiday. You can get some types of cat or dog that are more suitable for people with allergies - poodles I believe have like a wooly coat rather than hair so shed hair less, I think that there are others.
Go for it, so long as you can afford ample time to look after it !
It would only be unreasonable if you are living on your own and the pet would spend most of the day alone whilst you are at work. Or whether you are prepared and capable of providing everything it needs for its lifespan. Of course this depends on what the pet is, a cat might not be that bothered if you are out all day if you have a cat flap, and where you are - dog in a flat is not right and they need plenty of exercise / walking etc.
Yes Pippa if they are shaved short they look like a sheep but Pickles is more fluffy and gorgeous!!
You could always get a poodle (allergy-friendly) or do what we have just done - got a Labradoodle as my boyfriend couldn't see himself walking a poodle!! Not all Labradoodles have "wool" as opposed to fur, but they definately shed less and don't smell as much as they have less dander.
Also my doddle (Eric) is gorgeous and soooooo loving, I'd trade most of my relatives for just him!!
Remember though, a pet is not just for Christmas.

Unless you have a pet turkey of course.
What do they squeeze? The pet?

Also you can buy allergy wipes from pet shops to wipe your dog with to keep allergens down.
Get a cat
Hi bounceagain, freedom, hurrah!

As said previously, if you are sure you can afford the financial/emotional/time commitment of an animal, then by all means go for it! If someone didn't like my dog, they wouldn't come back to my house, and it would be their loss!

There are ways of minimising allergies, as has been mentioned, and the benefits of owning an animl far outweigh the benefits of having family to visit *lol*

Let us know your decision.
