I am a South African citizen and do not need a visa to enter Switzerland. Can I travel to the other schengen states from Switzerland without a visa?

No - you will need a visa.

What will happen when Switzerland joins Schengen I don't know.

Switzerland is part of Schengen isn't it?
As Dzug indicates, Switzerland is not a signatory to the Schengen agreement:
http://europa.eu/abc/travel/doc/index_en.htm
(People who hold a Swiss residence permit may travel freely within the Schengen countries but not other people admitted to Switzerland, irrespective of whether they require a visa to enter Switzerland).

If you wish to travel to Schengen countries, you should apply for a visa through the embassy or consulate of the first Schengen country you will enter (or of the principal country where you'll be staying if the first Schengen state is only visited in transit)..

Switzerland has signed the Schengen treaty but not yet implemented its provisions
