Make sure the bed is pulled away from the wall. Stand the legs of the bed in water - buy some cheap plastic cups or bowls or similar to use. They are not too keen on light either so you could sleep with the light on.

Most blocks of flats in London have this problem from time to time - including mine!
The other thing is be careful about killing them - when they die they shoot eggs out, usually under skirt ing boards if any are near. If you use an insect killing spray then spray the whole area around the cockroach for a couple of feet.
go to a decent hotel, not a cheap place.
You can buy plug in clickers, that produce a sound that scares them away, but is inaudible to humans. they really do work but are a tad on the expensive side.
Ive lived in the canaries for 5 years now, and the best method ive found is my two cats. I never see any Cookas but i do hear the odd crunching in the night, and find the odd leg the next morning.
I only find them in the early morning (about 7am) and I bash them with a broom - there is always 2 for some reason.
I know how you feel, I'm terrified of them! The cockroach spray sold in supermarkets abroad is very effective. I sprayed some around the entrance to my apartment in Fuerteventura and there were lines of dead roaches outside for about 5 days afterwards. in the morning, before you go out, close the windows and doors, spray all around the room, especially the edges, include the walls and curtains etc. Leave the windows and doors shut and go out for the day, when you return air the room (coz it will stink) and it should be ok.

Good luck
Hey Katy, where in Fuerte did you go. I live in Corralejo!!
The drill suggested by Katy May is spot on - around windows, doorways and any skirting or other openings (including drain points in en-suite toilet/bathroom) is the important part. I find that the original Baygon is best (red and green can).
