Sir Patrick Moore has apparently said that standards in television are slipping because women are in charge of programming. He also suggested that there should be separate channels to cater for men and women. He commented that "I used to watch Doctor Who and Star Trek, but they went PC - making women commanders, that kind of thing. I stopped watching." What do you think about Patrick's comments? Is it just the ramblings of an old-fashioned man, or is it something more?

Patrick Moore is one of our last, great, eccentrics, he may well have a point, but only so far, there are certain things that should be run by men, and there are things that should be run by women, how about knitting?.
It' not just women he's got it for :-

I wonder how he'd react to extra-terrestial visitors.

i cannot bring myself to respond with any great feeling or detail to the words of this silly old duffer.

it just goes to show how some people can appear intelligent and forward thinking in some ways, and then hopelessly ignorant and dull in others.

i expect he has just got deep-seated issues with women, stemming from when he discovered that xylophones are not terribly successful babe magnets.
I don't think he's that worried about attracting a woman - he'd rather stay in beating his wood anyway.
Lovely old man and a true English eccentric - but a duffer nonetheless.

And Lonnie - you're pushing your luck. Knitting indeed! :o)
Lonnie - I have a 4 hour intensive knitting introductory course in 2 weeks time and I'm a bloke (I'm not actually kidding and I've been wanting to learn for a long time)
AB Asks - I would have to agree with Patrick in that there is too much rubbish on TV these days and it does seem to be inspired by a bunch of tw4ts, the comments made about Dr Who and Star Trek were nonsense but the rest is absolutely true!
Evereyone - check this out, pure class

Proof, if ever proof was needed, that the xylophone is cool.
Peace!
That was tongue in cheek, as i'm sure was realised, I learned how to knit as a child, not that I do, although i've nothing against blokes who do, French knitting also.
I know Lonnie - if I'd have thought otherwise you'd have known all about - but then I expect you knew that! :o)
Oops - should have said 'known all about it'.
He's a lovely man, but a total eccentric so this is the kind of thing I would expect him to say. I don't understand why anyone would be offended by these harmless words.

It doesn't bother me a bit as it takes all sorts and I've read much more offensive stuff on the R & S section.

For anyone who doesn't know he was once engaged to a nurse but sadly she was killed.
That's such a shame! I for one will grieve when he popps his cloggs. He make space jolly exciting!
He's a genius, but he always was eccentric. He's entitled to his views, but I take his politics strictly with a pinch of salt. He has a mad sense of humour, and I always remember the Goodies episode where he appears as a punk.
The man is a fascinating genius in his field of expertise and I respect him greatly for this. However, this does not mean he is such a great thinker in all other matters. He is very eccentric and again this makes him fascinating. But, he is just a human like any other man or woman and will often be wrong, just like anyone else. He will have his views on women, but they are just HIS personal opinions and are really of no importance at all.
I personally do not think that any job / position / company etc. should or should not be run by a particular gender. Whatever the job is, it should be done by the person who is most suited in mental and physical capability, not by virtue of their gender. There are things that men are generally better at and things that women are better at, but there are also the exceptions!!! So, generalising is never the best thing to do.
I had to comment on this, what Patric Moore may say is what he thinks.
Little known but it's a sympton of a very complex condition he has called Aspergers.
Which explains why he is the way he is.. dress, attitude, genious, penantic speach, no social skills etc etc.. it is a form of autism, but little known..
I think he's right though tv is rubbish now.
