I have a lot of crap in my garage. An old bed, dismantled old wardrobe, amongst other things that I can't actually fit in a bin bag to be carted away by the council. Does my council (cardiff) have a service to dispose of such items? Or would I have to pay for a skip?

Why don't you ask your local council? Many have 'civic amenity' sites where you can take stuff. I'd have thought a place like Cardiff would be bound to have at least one.
I live in newport and they charge 3 pound a item, value for money I think GypsX
in Glasgow we can get an uplift for free. Granted the dont tell you exactly what day they will be there but will perhaps tell you to leave the stuff in your back garden or something and they will be there within the week. If your council does offer a service like that be careful not to leave anything you wish to keep anywhere near the rubbish - have heard of people 'losing' good garden furniture.
put it on freecycle.co.uk, people will collect
