can a folder in XP be password protected

yes dead easy, simply send folder you want password prorection on to a "compressed (zipped) folder"

Then navigate to the new Compressed folder and click File, add password..job done
just tried that but folder still opens without having to enter password
It will open the folder but if you try to open the contents it will ask you for a password before it will let you extract the files

But i was looking to be able to password protect the folder itself. Ie So that the folder could not be opened without the password.

This should do what you want. Download the program at the top of the list (Hide Files and Folders). It is freeware.
