what's the difference between a HAMLET & a VILLAGE?

Is it purely down to size?

By tradition, a 'hamlet' is simply a group of dwellings. But a 'village' would have a church, while a 'town' would have a market.
A hamlet does not have a church and falls within the parish of a nearby town or village.
