I am very sorry to be so thick, but please would someone tell me how a laptotp works when I am away. I want to buy one, but first of all would like to know the following:
When I use my PC I have BT as a server. How do I access the net if I am say, with my daughter in Southsea when my phone line is in Leicestershire. I know this is going to sound soooooo daft to all you clever people. Thank you

Using wireless (if you laptop is wireless enabled). If your daughter has wireless broadband at home, you could log onto her internet connection. If she doesn't, you would need to find a 'hotspot', usually in pubs or libraries (if you google for 'wireless hotspots' then there are lots of sites that will tell you where they are). Some are free, most you have to pay for using a credit card.

If you are on a dial up connection then just plug the lead from your laptop that normally goes into your phone socket into your daughter's phone line.
CC is taking the p**s ;-)

if you use a dialup connection ... make sure the laptop you buy has wireless, and standard network options
as well as a telephone modem

visit http://btopenzone.hotspot-directory.com/
then .... you can lurk round the railway station using their hotspot.

just plug into your daughter's line and carry on as normal

if you use broadband ... it's even simpler .... wait 'till you get back home
